October is here, and for Long Islanders who love big thrills & chills, it couldn't come soon enough! Across the Island, Haunted Houses and Halloween Attractions are opening their doors, and letting in only those who are brave enough to face the ghosts and ghouls that lie beyond their gates. If you're looking for heart-pounding fun this Halloween Season, you're in luck - Long Island's haunted houses are back, and bigger than ever this Halloween Season - locals are in for a real treat this October...and of course, some tricks!

The LongIsland.com News Team has made selecting which haunts to visit easy for you - we've gone out and braved the big scares at some of Long Island's biggest, most exhilarating haunts this year to give you an inside look at some of this season's most exiting attractions! Below, you'll find in-depth reviews of some of LI's hottest haunts - be sure to check back throughout the season, as we'll be visiting more haunts all October long!

NYZ Apocalypse - Deer Park, NY
September 4th – November 28th 
NYZ Apocalypse is not your typical haunted house. While most haunts will have you fleeing from their monsters with no chance to defend yourself, NYZ arms your team with laser rifles specially designed to put down the zombie menace! Just don't expect the added layer of self defense to make these zombies any less scary!

DarkSide Haunted House - Wading River, NY
October 2nd – November 1st
Featuring movie-quality sets and bone chilling special effects, DarkSide Haunted House remains one of the most frightening Halloween attractions on Long Island year in and year out. Come witness over 30 incredibly detailed scenes and 14,000 square feet of terror!

F&W Schmitt's Family Farm Haunted Mansion - Melville, NY
October 2nd – October 31st

For over 20 years the monsters at F&W Schmitt's Haunted Mansion have been scaring visitors from all across Long Island, and with a new design every year it's no wonder why haunt lovers keep coming back. In addition to the mansion, Schmitt's now features two additional attractions: The Haunted Corn Maze and The Experiment, a uniquely engaging stage show.

HorseAbility Haunted Hay Barn - Old Westbury, NY
October 16th - October 31st

The twisted minds behind the Bayville's renowned Haunted Fire House have returned to benefit a new cause; of course, they'll be scarring you out of your wits to do it! Enter the Horseability Haunted Hay Barn for a frightful night featuring 13 unnerving themed rooms!

Spooky Fest at Tanglewood Preserve - Rockville Centre, NY
October 17th – November 1st
Spooky Fest is the Center for Science Teaching and Learning's annual Halloween celebration. It is a family-friendly event featuring a live animal exhibits, crafts and face painting for kids, a not-so-spooky walk in the woods for young children, Haunted Woods and a Maze of Zombies for braver patrons, and much more!

Gateway’s Haunted Playhouse - Bellport, NY
September 25th – October 31st

Through most of the year the Gateway Playhouse operates as Long Island's oldest theater, but during Halloween season it is taken over by monsters, madmen, and other spooky creatures. The Haunted Playhouse features handcrafted costumes and masks, professional actors, and a midway full of thrilling activities which make for a full night of fear and fun!

Bayville ScreamPark - Bayville, NY
September 18th – November 6th

With five separate horrifying attractions Bayville Scream Park isn't just a haunted house, it's an entire theme park full of Halloween fun and terror! If you need a break from the monsters you can grab a bite to eat from one of the delicious onsite vendors, or hang out at the Zombie Bar and Lounge.

Chamber of Horrors - Hauppauge, NY
September 25th - November 1st

While Chamber of Horrors may stand in the same location most years, what lies within is an entirely different set of monsters and scares each and every season. The creatures have been hard at work making the Chamber even more horrifying than ever before, so prepare to be scared!

Spooky Walk at Camp Paquatuck - Center Moriches, NY
October 16th - October 24th

Spooky Walk has been raising funds to benefit Camp Paquatuck by terrifying patrons since 1989! Trek through these terrifying trails, and if you don't run screaming away from the camp then stick around for delicious treats including roast corn and homemade candy apples!

Yaphank Trail of Terror & Fall Family Festival - Yaphank, NY
October 9th - November 1st

The Yaphank Trail of Terror has been steadily growing since its inception, and this year promises even more new frightening scenes and fun activities! With all new scares as well as well as face painting, bonfires, concession, and more, the Yaphank of Trail of Terror makes for a whole night of thrills and chills!

The Haunted Castle - Sands Point, NY
October 23rd - October 31st

As Halloween draws nearer the ghosts who haunt the Castle at Hempstead House grow increasingly active. Do you have the courage to stand before the lost souls who call the Haunted Castle home?!

Farmingville FD Frighthouse - Farmingville, NY
October 2nd - October 31st

Featuring hand-crafted sets and frights, the Farmingville FD Fright House is a spooky experience with its own unique scares. If you have what it takes to make it all the way through then you can celebrate Halloween by getting scared silly and supporting the Farmingville Fire Department all at once!

RISE of the Jack O'Lanterns - Old Westbury, NY
October 2nd - October 25th

RISE of the Jack O'Lanterns is a Halloween treat unlike any other. While other attractions will try their best to scare you, RISE instead delights its audiences with stunning displays of painstakingly carved jack o' lanterns. RISE features thousands of pumpkins carefully crafted and carved into massive displays that will enthrall Halloween lovers of all ages!
